"El Libro de Chilam Balam" es uno de los más famosos, pues refleja la desesperación del aborigen por la invasión de los conquistadores. Se hallaron varias versiones de esta obra, con contenidos distintos según el pueblo que la hubiera escrito, pues se hacían diferentes versiones en los distintos clanes. Pero por su contenido de diversos temas: religiosos, históricos, literarios, sobre astronomía y calendarios, se puede apreciar toda la sabiduría del pueblo maya.
Se cree que sus autores fueron sacerdotes que transcribieron manuscritos sagrados, a los que acotaron noticias locales y elementos de la historia de cada lugar. Eran considerados libros sagrados y se los leía en ocasiones especiales.
las copias que se conservan no son las originales, sino transcripciones de alrededor del siglo XVI.

Los Mayas
El "Popol Vuh", "Las antiguas Historias del Quiché", el más conocido, es el libro sagrado de los indios quichés que habitaban en la zona de Guatemala.
Se explicaba en él el origen del mundo y de los indios mayas. También se relataba la historia de todos los soberanos.
Se puede señalar que hay allí una conjunción de religión, mitología, historia, costumbres y leyendas. Es esencialmente una descripción del conjunto de tradiciones mayas de quienes habitaban la región guatemalteca; pero también aparecen agregadas algunas ideas cristianas, lo que hace suponer que el autor conocía a misioneros católicos. No se conoce el nombre del autor pero por datos sacados del contenido de la obra, se supone que ha sido escrito hacia 1544.
Fue escrito originalmente en piel de venado, posteriormente trascripto en 1542 al latín por Fray Alonso del Portillo de Noreña.
La versión española fue realizada sobre este último texto en el siglo XVIII (1701) por el fraile dominico Francisco Ximénez que se había establecido en Santo Tomás Chichicastenango. Y "Popol Vuh" lo llamó un estudioso de temas americanistas, que en el siglo XIX lo tradujo al francés, Charles Etienne Brasseur de Bourbourg.
